Frequently Asked Questions

What is PCI DSS and who needs to comply?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards designed to ensure that all companies that accept, process, store, or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. Any organization that handles payment card data must comply, regardless of size or transaction volume.

The SAQ that applies depends on how your business processes payment card data. SAQ A is for merchants that have fully outsourced card processing to a PCI DSS compliant third party, SAQ C covers merchants using internet-connected payment applications with no electronic card data storage, and SAQ D applies to merchants that store card data electronically or do not qualify for any other SAQ type. Businesses processing more than six million transactions annually are classified as Level 1 and must undergo a full audit by a Qualified Security Assessor rather than completing an SAQ.

PCI DSS requires both internal and external vulnerability scans to be performed at least once every three months. External scans must be conducted by a PCI SSC Approved Scanning Vendor (ASV) and internal scans must be authenticated scans as of PCI DSS v4.0. Additional scans are also required after any significant changes to your environment. A minimum of four passing scans per year must be maintained to remain compliant.

Reducing compliance scope limits the number of systems subject to PCI DSS controls, simplifying compliance and reducing cost. The most effective method is network segmentation, which isolates the Cardholder Data Environment from the rest of your network, as without segmentation your entire network is considered in scope. Additional strategies include tokenisation, which replaces card data with a non-sensitive identifier, and point-to-point encryption (P2PE), which removes card data from your environment at the point of capture.

If a cardholder data breach occurs or is suspected, you must notify your acquiring bank and the relevant card brands, typically within 24 to 72 hours. The payment brands may require a forensic investigation conducted by a PCI SSC approved Payment Card Industry Forensic Investigator (PFI), and any merchant that experiences a breach is automatically elevated to Level 1 compliance, requiring a full QSA audit. Non-compliance fines imposed through acquiring banks can reach up to $100,000 per month, and the organisation may also face increased processing fees or loss of the ability to accept card payments.

An SAQ is a self-assessment that eligible merchants complete internally to validate their own PCI DSS compliance, whereas a QSA audit produces a formal Report on Compliance conducted by an independent Qualified Security Assessor approved by the PCI SSC. A QSA audit is mandatory for Level 1 merchants and provides a higher level of independent assurance than a self-assessment. For organisations that want independent verification without a full audit, a QSA can also assist with completing and validating an SAQ.
