Frequently Asked Questions
Does the SOCI Act apply to my manufacturing business?
The SOCI Act applies to certain critical infrastructure sectors, including energy, water, food and grocery, transport, communications, financial services and markets, data storage or processing, the defence industry, health care and medical, higher education and research, and space technology. We can help determine if your operations are covered.
What's the difference between third and fourth party risk?
Third party risk comes from vendors and contractors you have a direct relationship with and who can access your systems or data. Fourth party risk comes from your vendors’ own subcontractors, who you have no direct relationship with but whose security still affects you. Both layers fall within the supply chain risks your SOCI Act risk management program needs to address.
How do we manage fourth party risk when we have no direct relationship?
Fourth party risk is managed indirectly, by requiring your direct vendors to contractually disclose their own supplier relationships. We help you build right to audit clauses, subcontractor security requirements and regular reporting obligations into vendor contracts, ensuring your SOCI Act risk management program accounts for risk beyond your immediate supplier tier.
What happens if one of our suppliers has a cyber incident?
If a supplier has a cyber incident, you may face operational disruption, data exposure, or obligations under the SOCI Act and the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, depending on the relationship and data involved. We help develop supplier incident response playbooks and ensure your CIRMP addresses supply chain hazards.
How long does it take to achieve SOCI Act compliance?
Most manufacturers can establish initial SOCI Act compliance, including asset registration and a baseline risk management program, within three to six months. Full maturity, including enhanced obligations if you hold a System of National Significance, often takes longer and depends on your existing security posture and the complexity of your supply chain.
Can you help us prepare for a government audit?
Yes. We help you prepare for a SOCI Act compliance audit by reviewing your risk management program against the Act’s requirements, organising your evidence and documentation, and briefing your team on what auditors typically look for. We can also attend the audit alongside you if needed.
